Joelle Mercedes is multimedia artist, producing works that reframe origin while creating new metaphors that encourage yet complicate the notion of self-determination, self-authorship, and personal mythologies. The work is concerned with and inquires about origins of complicated cultural narratives that often get oversimplified. Joelle Mercedes currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. Mercedes’ work has been shown at Threewalls, Roman Susan, Arts Incubator and Lynden Sculpture Garden, among others. Recently, Mercedes has been published in Strange Attractors a book project of the 10th Berlin Biennale: We Don’t Need Another Hero. Mercedes was an artist and facilitator in the Eclipsing Festival: The Politics of Night, The Politics of Light at Links Hall. Moreover, a visiting artist at the California Institute of The Arts, as part of The Paul Brach Visiting Artist Lecture Series in 2017.
